Holy Week activities for Orthodox families with young children.

Only a few more days till Holy Week begins!

I can’t believe how Lent just flew by like that. In a few days, we will be celebrating Palm Sunday and then partaking in Holy Week.

Covid disrupted our traditional observance of Holy Week last year. Sadly, in Canada, we will once again be “online” rather than at church during the most solemn and spiritually nourishing weeks of the year. However, I try to focus on the positive: technology is helping turn our living room into a micro Church, and we are still able to follow along with the chants, readings, and prayers.

Holy Week for children

Thanks to the ingenious ideas of very brilliantly creative souls, along with the liturgical rites, we can also leverage activities prepared for children to help immerse them in the spirit of Holy Week.

I have scoured the internet to find fantastic, free, doable, entertaining, and spiritually beneficial activities, coloring pages, memory games, word puzzles, and resources to help our children to follow along Holy Week.

* Only two resources need to be purchased, but they are affordable and adorable.

Top Activities Compilation

I compiled the results of my internet hunting expedition in the following presentation for ease of usage. Each slide contains a picture to illustrate the content and the link to the site.

I have also included an incredible resource: a Pascha booklet for children that explains what happens during each day of Holy Week with the accompanying explanations, prayers, and meditations.

The slides begin with activities/resources for the whole week and end with a few that are specific to certain days of Holy Week and then Easter Sunday.

I wish you and your families a wonderful time partaking in these activities, and I pray that Holy Week, 2022, is back as the ones we took for granted.

After graduating with a Major in Journalism, Mireille’s career path took an unexpected turn away from her beloved pen and paper. It took an equally unexpected turn of events for Mireille to start writing again. After spending many hours (too many!) watching super hero cartoons with her son, she realized that most Christian children are unaware of their superpowers! She set about creating the SuperHolies: the Fruits of the Holy Spirit re-imagined as superpowers to grab the children’s attention and teach them about their faith and its glory.
